I came from Austria. My father was a teacher of history and my mother was a teacher of music. My parents were very loving and taught me to be very proud of our country and its unique history. I have many fond memories of my childhood, especialy sitting by the fireplace while my mother would knit us sweaters and my father would tell stories and sing the many wonderful folk songs of our country and its people. The great war came and my father was killed. My mother decided to bring me to America. It was too painfull for her to stay in Austria. It was 1916 and I was 11 years old. The voyage across the great ocean was very long and frightening, my mother occupied the long days tending to the sick, during this time she became ill and died a few days before we arrived in New York. I am happy to be alive and in New York. Never the less I am homeless and alone. Kathryn |
